Jamil S. Zainaldin is a
historian who seeks to promote greater appreciation and understanding of
history and the story of humanity. He
has served as President of the Georgia Humanities council since 1997.How and/or when did you get you hooked on history?
I became hooked on history in the last semester of my senior year in college, when I realized history was helping me understand the world at a very confusing and also exciting time, the 1960s.
What role does history play or has it played in your personal life?
Through history and the humanities I have met great people - in books and stories, and in real life - who are inspirations to me.
How is/How was history a part of your professional life/career?
Initially, after a period of classroom teaching, I went to work on Capital Hill in D.C. My history education helped me to connect public policy to societal needs and social change, which was part of my job as a staff member of the U.S. House Select Committee on Aging.
Why is studying/knowing history important?
It can help make us wise: we become discerning
citizens, not victims. What is your favorite period or aspect of history to learn about or teach about and why?
Ancient history and 20th century American history -
because these eras are full of great human stories, challenges, and thought.
What is the role of the Georgia Humanities Council in promoting history and
history education?
GHC helps fund and organize programs that open the
door for public involvement in history and culture.
